Chemistry, Grade 12
Welcome to Chemistry grade 12, Applied. [SCH4C]
Here is a quick summary of what we will cover in this course:
Matter and Qualitative Analysis
• The properties of matter can be predicted and analysed qualitatively.
• Substances can be identified based on their distinct properties.
• Qualitative analysis of matter is used in many different fields of endeavour.
Organic Chemistry
• Organic compounds have predictable chemical and physical properties determined by their respective structures.
Organic compounds can be synthesized by living things or through artificial processes.
Organic chemical reactions and their applications have significant implications for society, human health, and the environment.
Electrochemistry
• Oxidation and reduction are paired chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred from one substance to another in a predictable way.
• The control and applications of oxidation and reduction reactions have significant implications for society and the environment.
Chemical Calculations
• Relationships in chemical reactions can be described quantitatively.
• Quantitative relationships of chemical reactions have applications in the home, workplace, and the environment.
Chemistry in the Environment
• Air and water quality can be affected by both natural processes and human activities. • Quantitative relationships of chemical reactions can be used to assess air and water quality.
Final Mark Breakdown:
Term Work (70%) will include a variety of assessment tasks designed to demonstrate students’ development in their knowledge and understanding, thinking and inquiry, communication and application, of all overall expectations.
Summative evaluation (30%) takes place towards the end of the semester, after completion of ALL ASSESSMENTS, and provides the final opportunity for students to demonstrate what they know, and the skills they have learned, based on the overall expectations.
The summative evaluation will consist of a Final Exam, which will be written, IN PERSON.
*Proctor supervision may apply to students outside Ontario.
Awarding of Course Credit: Students who demonstrate evidence of achievement of overall expectations, and earn a mark of 50% or greater, will earn one credit for the course with the following exception:
Students who do not pass the final exam (earn a mark lower than %50 on the exam) will not earn their credit regardless of their mark.
Learning Skills and Work Habits
The development of learning skills and work habits is a key indicator of future success. The following learning skills and work habits will be developed, assessed, and reported during this course:
1. Responsibility: fulfills responsibilities and commitments (e.g. accepts and acts on feedback)
2. Organization: manages time to complete tasks and achieve goals (e.g. meets goals, on time)
3. Independent work: uses class time appropriately to complete tasks (e.g. monitors own learning)
4. Collaboration: works with others, promotes critical thinking (e.g. provides feedback to peers)
5. Initiative: demonstrates curiosity and an interest in learning (e.g. sets high goals)
6. Self-Regulation: sets goals, monitors progress towards achieving goals (e.g. sets, reflects goals)
You are expected to finish this course in 2 months, from the first date you log-in to Moodle for this course.
On the first 2 weeks, you are supposed to finish Unit #1 and write Quiz #1 and Test #1 at the end.
